Youngs' ('50) Commitment to Rider Remains Solid

Herb Young '50 says that for as long as he can remember, he has wanted to be involved in two things: community service and sports. For Herb and his wife, Joan Hatcliffe Young '50, Rider University provides opportunities in each of those areas. As undergraduates, Joan was a member of the Sigma Iota Chi sorority and Herb was a Delta Sigma Pi. Herb also played intramural sports and junior varsity football, and he was one of the managers of the baseball team.

More than 50 years after graduation, the Youngs' commitment to Rider is solid. They have been leaders on the Alumni Council and in the alumni chapters of their Greek organizations. In addition, they are among Rider athletics' most loyal fans.

Herb and Joan support Rider athletics because it offers students a chance to be part of a close-knit community, creating bonds that last a lifetime. Herb says that Rider can be especially proud of Athletic Director Don Harnum and his coaching staff because "they raise school spirit, and they are interested in keeping the players focused on their academic responsibilities."

Along with their volunteer support, the Youngs have consistently given generous financial support to Rider. Most recently, they entered into charitable gift annuity agreements with the University to benefit the women's softball program. Herb and Joan view their gift as a win-win arrangement. For the rest of their lives they will receive income from these gifts and, at the end of their lives, Rider will receive the remainder. Herb says that their gifts are given "in appreciation for many years of great experiences." Because of Herb and Joan's generosity, future generations of Rider students will benefit just as they did.
